This past June, twenty-six businesses, organizations, and municipalities from around the state competed in the CommuteSmart NH Statewide Challenge, adapting their current commuting practices for more sustainable methods of getting to and from work. The pilot challenge was open to all employers in New Hampshire and encouraged the use of carpooling, walking, bicycling, telecommuting, or using transit in place of driving alone. Participants were able join their team and log their smart commute trips in the NH Rideshare site.
Awards were given for the Most Sustainable Trips in the following size categories: small business (2-19 employees), medium business (20-99 employees), and large business (100+ employees). An award was also given for Most Social Media Buzz and participants were encouraged to use the hashtag #SmartCommuteTheRoute.
The winners are:
Most Sustainable Trips
Small (2-19 employees): S&W Sports
Medium (20-99 employees): NHDES Air Division
Large (100+ employees): NHDES Water Division
Most Social Media Buzz: S&W Sports
Overall, participants logged 2,212 trips totaling 29,800 miles, and saved 23,056 pounds of pollutants and $17,235. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated! For more information on this event, please visit commutesmartnh.org.
